Breer: Patriots fans don’t know what a rebuild looks like
On Wednesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Albert Breer explains why expectations are so high for the New England Patriots.
Breer: High Expectations for Patriots
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: This Patriots team was supposed to lose. This team was considered by many as having the worst roster in football.
Albert Breer: It drives me crazy because they’re a young rebuilding team that is going to be wildly inconsistent. Their main problem is being in this market where everything is examined at the level that it is. I love it and it’s the reason we all have the opportunity to cover sports. But it is discussed the way that it’s examined.
And, this team is following two decades of the most mind-bending consistency you’ll ever see. The dynasty Patriots were a jackhammer of a consistent program. The idea of following that with a rebuild is tough. A rebuild comes with a ton of inconsistency, with ups and downs and highs and lows.
And I think that’s sort of the problem, people comparing this team with the dynasty era. That’s been the problem the last couple of years with how people assess the team. Most people here, including the media, haven’t seen a bad football team in a generation. So, they don’t know what a rebuild looks like. They don’t know what a teardown looks like, and that’s where the Patriots are right now.
Week to week, there’s going to be inconsistency when you’re relying on 23- and 24-year-olds to grow. You’re going to have weeks where it looks like there’s no one coaching the team. No matter who the coach is.
These are the things they’re going through. And I think it’s tough for the people here to examine the team on a week-to-week basis because they haven’t seen it before.
Jon Wallach: But the most important thing, and I think the fans want to know this as well. Are the people in charge of that development the right people? We’re 12 games in now. More specifically, with the important development of Drake Maye, is Alex Van Pelt the right offensive coordinator to lead this kid in the future?
