NFL Insider hints at Patriots trading down for J.J. McCarthy
On Wednesday’s Zolak & Bertrand radio program, the guys react to a Jeremy Fowler tweet saying that the New England Patriots would be interested in drafting J.J. McCarthy.
Kraft Likes J.J. McCarthy?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Bertrand: Jeremy Fowler writes, “The sense after asking around is that Patriots have Williams-Daniels-Maye as their expected order at 1, 2, 3. But had one league source broach this last night — ‘I think people are discounting the Kraft-Brady-McCarthy connection in all of this.’ Could be a thought for a trade-back.”

Bertrand: I don’t know if you saw this, but yesterday, we mentioned quickly that J.J. McCarthy had visited with Robert Kraft when he was here on his visit to New England. And J.J. McCarthy has revealed that and has spoken about it. He kissed the Super Bowl rings of Robert Kraft like you wouldn’t believe. I mean, very impressed with Robert Kraft.
Zolak: To the point where you look at the situation and wonder if they’re looking for a culture change to institute a winning attitude. They’re trying to build off that University of Michigan name. It’s that type of situation.
Bertrand: I mean, this kid’s bright. He knows what he’s doing. He described Robert Kraft as the coolest, smoothest guy I’ve met in a long time. Saying that he knows the franchise is in good hands with the Krafts in charge of the organization. He said that what Jerod Mayo is building is “a feeling that I got when I first stepped into Michigan. A sense of urgency to rebuild culture, rebuild the team to where they want to get to and where they are.”
Or, where the Patriots used to be. At the top of the league. Why would they want J.J. McCarthy, though?
Zolak: Why would they want the guy that Mazz just wants a punch in the face?
And that’s because he will pay off sooner and make Eliot Wolf look good. Is he going to get selfish with the pick? Is the front office going to get selfish with their pick?
Is J.J. McCarthy down there in Foxboro on a 30 visit just kissing everyone’s ass and making the greatest of impressions? They’re all convincing themselves that he’s the next Tom Brady. Is that happening? Is that what’s going on?
