Reiss: Patriots came up small in big moments against Colts
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss expressed his displeasure with the New England Patriots’ performance against the Indianapolis Colts.
Reiss: Patriots Folded
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: You had some problems with what happened yesterday?
Mike Reiss: Not good, Fred. Not good.
Hardy: Okay, so what was the worst thing yesterday? Because there was plenty to watch. At least the Patriots gave us something to watch. It was an exciting game in the first and fourth quarters. The Patriots did make some decent plays yesterday. So, what was it that upset you the most?
Mike Reiss: Oh, Hardy. They got the ball back with 7:59 left after Christian Gonzalez’s interception. You’re at your 48-yard line, and up 24-17 at home. That’s when you are supposed to put the steak through the opponent’s heart and bury it.
In the end, they couldn’t have come up smaller on offense, defensively, and special teams. And the coaches are to blame, as well. They folded.
Fred Toucher: Ok, so explain the coaching situation. What are your problems with the coaching?
Reiss: Alright, so I’ll start with 3rd-and10, Colts have the ball on their 19, game-winning drive, you have to challenge that catch. One of the first things I looked at was the catch by Will Mallory. I think you’ve got to consider challenging that play.
One of the things I wanted to do this morning was to watch that play over again. I needed to send it to one of the contacts I have who used to work in officiating, and I asked them to explain the call to me.
I don’t always understand the intricacies of the catch rule. Was this a catch? And the response comes back to me, “That was not a catch, in my view. That was pretty clear. “The ground aided the catch.” So, that’s the first thing with coaching that bothered me.
And then the second thing on the coaching, defensively, do something!
