Breer: Mike Vrabel’s availability could interest Patriots ownership
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Albert Breer explained what would happen if Jerod Mayo somehow impeded the development of Drake Maye, especially if Mike Vrabel is available.
Jerod Mayo vs. Mike Vrabel
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Hardy: What happens if Jerod Mayo somehow impedes or damages Drake Maye’s development somehow? Could that change things for him in terms of having more than one year with the team?
Albert Breer: Yeah, and I think it also goes beyond the head coach though. It’s more about what you put around Drake Maye. They also put Maye in a bad spot for his first start. I would’ve thrown him in there against Jacksonville. His first experience was against Houston, having to go up against those pass rushers in Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter.
But, yes, I think that honestly becomes a huge part of the decision-making process. Do you feel like your young quarterback is in good hands? Yes, the team has a lot of problems and they’ve been through a lot. But can they get to a point where the last month of the season looks good? Say that their schemes start to take hold and Drake Maye looks really.
Then the Patriots would be in a position where they won’t want to flip the Apple cart upside down with the young quarterback.
There are plenty of examples of teams with rookie quarterbacks that finish the year strong, trending in an upward direction. I think that’s what you want to look like at the end of the year.
The flip side is that if it doesn’t look that way, now you’re concerned about the development of your young quarterback. Now you’re thinking to yourself, we can’t waste another year with the current setup. I do believe Jerod will get a second year and still have potential as a head coach. But the one thing that could be the wrench in this whole thing for him is the availability of Mike Vrabel.
The Krafts could look at that situation and think, if we don’t hire Vrabel now, we’ll never get a shot at signing him. He could go to another team.
