Conor Ryan questions cap space strategy in Bruins’ Ullmark Trade with Ottawa
The Boston Bruins’ recent trade of Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators has raised significant questions about the team’s cap space strategy. While the Bruins received a first-round pick and a prospect player, along with fourth-line player MARK KASTELIC who adds physicality, speed, and size to their bottom six, the inclusion of goalie JOONAS KORPISALO in the trade is puzzling. This move does not create the much-needed cap space the Bruins were aiming for. Conor Ryan, who joined Toucher and Hardy this morning, expressed concerns that the trade did not achieve the primary objective of alleviating the Bruins’ cap space issues, leaving fans and analysts questioning the overall impact and strategy behind the deal.

Fred Toucher: The Bruins traded Linus Ullmark to Ottawa. Can you tell us about what they got in return and your thoughts?
Conor Ryan: Yeah, I mean, I think you look at the trade and, yes, it’s great that the Bruins were able to get a few solid assets back. They get back into the first round and add a player to their prospect pipeline. They also acquired MARK KASTELIC, a fourth-line player who adds a little bit of physicality. Is he a needle mover? Not necessarily. But he adds some speed and a little bit of size to the bottom six group. However, the Bruins also bring in JOONAS KORPISALO as a goalie, which is kind of the biggest head-scratcher with this deal. When you’re trading a goalie, even a great one, it’s tough to gauge what the proper return should be. The biggest issue with this deal is that it doesn’t create much cap space, which was the primary goal of the trade. Regardless of the return, that was the key factor.
A look at all of the Bruins' pending unrestricted free agents
The start of free agency is officially within a week’s time for the Bruins and the rest of the NHL.
And while the Bruins have their sights set on being ‘aggressive’ and trying to tackle some major areas of need with over $21 million in cap space (and a number that’ll only go up if and when Linus Ullmark is traded), the club also has some decisions to make on their own pending free agents.
