Reiss: I think Bill Belichick takes North Carolina job
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss reacted to reports that Bill Belichick interviewed for the football head coaching vacancy at the University of North Carolina.
Reiss: Belichick to UNC?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Do you think Bill Belichick takes the North Carolina football job?
Mike Reiss: I think he would take it.
Toucher: And do you think that it’s true that it’s based on Steve Belichick being the coach in waiting? And you know Steve Belichick better than me. I’ve never even seen him in person. How does that play if you’re Steve Belichick? Do you want that if you’re him?
Reiss: Yeah, I think so. That’s just my opinion, I don’t have any inside information on it. I think to me, Bill Belichick is a coach and coaches want to coach.
If the opportunity isn’t there in the NFL, and that’s the best opportunity, I think he would take it. Plus, an added bonus would be if he could set up his son as a successor. He could also spend time with his son while he’s still coaching. That, to me, would be a win for him.
Toucher: (Sarcastically) He was so absent when he was younger because he was coaching so hard. But here’s the deal… Is it more advantageous for Bill to have his son as an heir apparent? Is that attractive to North Carolina? Do you think Belichick gets the North Carolina job without his son as the successor? That’s my most important question.
Reiss: I do. I think that the analogy I would make is to like Nick Saban. When this college playoff came out yesterday—and I don’t follow it that closely—but he was someone that I sought out his opinion because I think he’s a Ph.D.-level coach. I want to hear from someone like that.
When you have someone like that, the view you have of football forever changes. I think that’s what you’re getting if you’re North Carolina and hire Bill Belichick. He comes down for however many years and everyone that touches that program will be better for it when he’s there and in the ensuing years.
He thinks and lives the game at a level that few others do.
