MassLive’s Mark Daniels shares the ‘most shocking’ revelation about Mac Jones with Toucher & Hardy
During this morning’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Mark Daniels joined the show to discuss his latest story on Mac Jones and how a once-promising quarterback is now a huge question mark on whether or not he’d be on the team.
According to Mark Daniels’ article on MassLive.com, Mac Jones’ relationship with the New England Patriots deteriorated during the 2023 season, marked by a lack of communication and frustration. The decline started in his second season, exacerbated by coaching changes and offensive issues, leading to Jones playing outside his comfort zone. Mental struggles, lack of support from the offensive line and receivers, and roster-building problems contributed to Jones’ regression.

Sources also tell Mark Daniels that the Patriots are not expected to exercise Mac Jones’ fifth-year option, making him a free agent in 2024. Speculation suggests they might trade him during the offseason, depending on the potential return. Despite Jones’ decline in performance after a strong rookie season, his future with the Patriots remains uncertain.
Fred Toucher highlighted the surprising revelation that Mac Jones felt poorly treated by the New England Patriots, especially in comparison to how the New York Jets handled Zach Wilson. Mark Daniels shares that Jones didn’t find out he would be inactive until 90 minutes before a game against the Jets, leading him to express his frustration to a member of the Jets staff. In contrast, the Jets were reportedly upfront with Wilson about their plans to trade him in the offseason after he was benched. This stark difference in communication and treatment surprised both Toucher and Daniels, considering the usual competitive dynamics between the two teams.

Fred Toucher: I’m probably the only one, being a Jets fan, to find this interesting. I know just how garbage the organization is, but there is a revelation that you have in there. Maybe I’m the only one into revelations, but I find it interesting how poorly Mac Jones thought he was being treated in New England compared to how the Jets treated Zach Wilson.
Mark Daniels: Yeah, wild, right? Honestly, I started working on this project around the end of October. I got these little nuggets, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’d be really interesting if I just ran with it now.’ I really gambled and held everything to have this big overall story. By far, one of the most shocking things was that Mac Jones didn’t find out he was going to be inactive until 90 minutes before the Patriots’ game against the Jets. He was so upset with the lack of communication that he vented to a member of the Jets organization. What he meant by that, from what I was told, was that Diana Rossini reported the Jets were upfront with Zach Wilson, saying, ‘Hey, you know, this isn’t working out. We’re going to trade you in the offseason,’ and that happened after he was benched. So I compare and contrast that to Mac, who, at this point, from what I was told, Bill Belichick wasn’t talking to him. He was telling others in the locker room, ‘No one talks to me.’ He felt like he was on an island, and then he’s inactive, and no one told him that he’d be the emergency third quarterback. I’m up there with you because, you know, when has one of the Jets done anything better than the Patriots? Someone from the Patriots organization or quarterback would be like, ‘Oh, I appreciate how you guys did this,’ in contrast to the Patriots. Yeah, I was shocked when I was told that.
