Bruins crash & burn in sloppy loss to Flames
The Boston Bruins could have had a better start to the second half of their season.
In their first game back from the bye week, the Bruins came out flat and spotted the Calgary Flames an early two-goal lead, and could never overcome their issues in an ugly 4-1 loss Tuesday night at TD Garden. Pavel Zacha scored the lone goal for the B’s, while Jeremy Swayman stopped 26 of 30 Flames shots in the defeat.
Calgary drew first and second blood in this one. Newcomer Andrei Kuzmenko, who went to the Flames in the Elias Lindholm trade with the Canucks, opened the scoring after new linemate Jonathan Huberdeau found him bearing down in the high slot on a rush, then he ripped a shot past Swayman.
Connor Zary scored the second goal after the Bruins defense completely lost him along the side boards, allowing him to dash around and cut to the net, where he beat Swayman with a deke and a backhand to make it 2-0 Flames.
The Bruins climbed back in it after successive Calgary penalties gave them a 5-on-3 advantage. They cashed in with a one-timer off the stick of Zacha to cut the lead in half at 2-1 Flames.

Unfortunately for the Bruins, their defensive zone sloppiness quickly came back to bite them again. A turnover off the half-boards enabled Huberdeau to wrestle the puck away from McAvoy, then just let it rip with a shot past Swayman. No bailout save there. The Flames went back up by two, 3-1, after the Huberdeau goal.
Calgary later made it 4-1 on a power play, as defenseman Noah Hanifin rushed down low and flipped a backhand toward the net hoping for something to happen, and he got his wish as the puck squeaked through Swayman to give Hanifin’s team a three-goal lead.
Up Next: It doesn’t get any easier for the Bruins. They get back in action on Thursday night, when the first-place Vancouver Canucks come to TD Garden for a top-seed showdown.
