Cam Newton says he won’t be ‘disgruntled’ by Patriots drafting Mac Jones
Cam Newton is ready to compete for his job, if that’s what the Patriots’ quarterback competition comes down to. He doesn’t view the team’s first-round selection of Mac Jones as a threat, but rather an opportunity.
Asked about his reaction to the Jones pick Thursday morning on ESPN’s Key, Jay, &Z, Newton replied, “When Mac was picked there was no type of ill will feelings, and there’s still no ill will feelings because competition brings out the best in everybody…I mean, come on, let’s be honest. I’ve been playing this game long enough to know that’s the right pick.”
Even if Newton did feel slighted by the pick, he’s not going to let it affect him, especially in a professional setting. “I said it numerous and numerous times that – what you’re not going to get out of me as a disgruntled person,” Newton explained. “Mac & Cheese [Newton’s nickname for Jones] is a person who is – ever since I’ve seen him – has came on into the locker room with a business approach, doing the initiatives of learning his teammates, understand that, ‘I’ve got to raise my level of play from the collegiate level to the professional level.'”
