Does Travis Hunter’s position for the NFL Combine hint at his future?
The NFL announced the full list of players invited to the 2025 NFL Combine on Thursday. That list includes Colorado’s Travis Hunter listed as a defensive back.
On Thursday afternoon the NFL announced the list of 329 prospects who will attend this year’s NFL Combine. This year’s Combine announcement was more notable than most due to one player – Travis Hunter.
Colorado’s two-way star is expected to be among the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, but the question of what position he will be drafted at remains. Early reported suggests most teams – but not all – view him primarily as a cornerback.
The NFL’s listing of Hunter could be a confirmation that that is how the league views him. Hunter is included with the defensive backs on the list of Combine invites after starting at both cornerback and wide receiver for the Buffaloes.

That means Hunter will do his on-field workouts when the rest of the defensive backs do – as each position works out together over the four days of the NFL Combine. Defensive backs are scheduled to do media interviews on Thursday, Feb. 27 with on-field workouts the next day on Friday.
At the same time, this doesn’t prevent Hunter from doing on-field drills with the wide receivers if he wants and/or if teams want him to. He likely wouldn’t run a separate 40-yard dash, 3-cone drill, etc. but could go through the positional drills for both spots. That would just mean doing an extra day of workouts and back-to-back days on the field with receivers (along with quarterbacks and running backs) set to work out on Saturday.
Whether or not Hunter does that remains to be seen but it will be something worth watching for when the Combine begins. Whichever position Hunter is ultimately drafted at though he will have game-changing potential. He played both ways full-time for Colorado the last two years (and the year before at Jackson State) and was a Unanimous All-American on both sides of the ball last season.
Hunter’s positional listing was the most notable, but not the only notable one among projected top draft picks. Penn State’s Abdul Carter will work out as a defensive lineman. He began his career as an off-ball linebacker before moving primarily to edge rusher for the 2024 season. Unlike Hunter though, both of Carter’s positions will work out on the same day, kicking off the event on Thursday.
