Zolak & Bertrand: Former NFL QB views Drake Maye as a poor man’s Justin Herbert
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, former NFL QB Jim Miller explained why he sees Drake Maye as a poor man’s Justin Herbert.
I think Maye is sharp…
Jim Miller: I think the kid can handle things.
Bertrand: What do you like about him? What does he do well?
Miller: I think he’s sharp. I think he’s got a good arm. He’s got a ton of talent. He’s got a big arm. He can move for big guy.
Zolak: Does he remind you of Herbert?
Miller: Yeah.
Zolak: I’m starting to see the similarities. Not all of it is over the top. Six-foot-five but still moves athletically.
Miller: Yeah, he’s a strapping lad. He’s a good athlete, is what I’ve said about him. I like the offense that he ran down at North Carolina because it was wide open. They ran streak reads and stuff, so he’s very comfortable.
I think from the neck up, he’s a very sharp guy. He’s got great athleticism and a strong arm. Like you said, he’s got good whip, good velocity and he can move for a big guy. But I would say he’s a poor man’s Justin Herbert. Herbert is a strapping dude.
Bertrand: That’s not a bad comp. I mean, that’s kind of a good thing. I’ll take that. We’re just so desperate for anything that’s good.
Zolak: Herbert 2.0
Miller: Just think about all those years with Brady. Four quarterbacks played last year for this team, right? Some teams are never able to find a replacement for their franchise quarterback of the past. I hope that’s not the case here in New England but you never know.
Zolak: Yeah, I don’t know what their approach was last year. Did you know they had 21 transactions at the quarterback position last year? I’m talking about bringing third guys in.
Like it was just a crazy year, Jim.
Bertrand: How many wins do you think this team has this season?
Miller: Six.
Bertrand: That the high end or….
Miller: I think it’s the high end, yeah. I think it’s a six- to eight-win team.
