Mike Reiss: Patriots are in the best position of all the worst teams
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com discussed why the Patriots are in the best positional of all the worst teams in the NFL.
Drake Maye is the silver lining…
Marc Bertrand:
The reason you’re still willing to watch this is Drake Maye. He’s why you watch. There’s no other player because offense is what sells, Mike. Offense is sexy. There’s no other player on this team that people say, oh I need to watch them. I need to turn on the Pats today at 1:00 PM because I want to see Rhamondre Stephenson. No, that’s not happening. I want to see who Kendrick Bourne? Not happening. Hey, they’ve got great tight ends. Nah, not so much. That doesn’t really sell. They’ve got a quarterback and that’s why people still want to watch them, because for the second straight year they are 3-10 after 13 games.
Mike Reiss:
I’m with you, Beetle. That’s the silver lining and as Zo said after the game, people should be angry. I think when you step back from that emotion and start comparing the Patriots situation to others around the league, teams that you’d lump them in with, like the Raiders, and this is not a very flattering group of teams. The Jets, the Panthers, the Giants, the Titans. They’re in the best situation among the worst teams in the league, so let’s call it like it is. The Patriots are one of the worst teams in the league.
Scott Zolak:
Sad thing is that 3 of those teams beat you. That’s the problem. But you’re talking about the future… What if they can’t snag those guys in free agency though? What if they can’t convince somebody to come here, play with them? What if they got the money and people still don’t want to come here? That is a big risk.
