Albert Breer: DeMarcus Covington Could Be Replaced in The Offseason
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Albert Breer who is the lead content strategist for the MMQB, joined the show. While discussing the Patriots deficiencies on defense, Breer mentioned how the Patriots defensive coordinator, DeMarcus Covington, could be replaced next season in favor of a more experienced figure leading being in charge of that side of the ball.
“I Think There’s a Chance Of It…”
Zolak: Yeah, I just think like the constant zone coverage, and to allow Jonnu Smith to run to open space like that. That’s part of the game to me. That’s not being undermanned. They didn’t communicate well. They got they got taken on that one touchdown on a double slant with nobody back. That’s scheme.
Albert Breer: I’ve come to appreciate Tua too. Getting to see what that offense looks like. That offense is so built on timing, anticipation, and accuracy.. His ability to just play the position fast, and you can see the effect he has when you take him out. It’s fun to watch because they’re built that way. They’re built for him to play point guard out there.
Bertrand: Okay. But also, the Patriots defense does not appear to be well coached.
Albert Breer: I’ve been on that for two months now.
Bertrand: We’ve been talking about it.
Albert Breer: When everybody was focused on Van Pelt, I thought Covington was as big a problem. Now I think he’s a bigger problem.
Bertrand: Is he going to get fired?
Albert Breer: I think there’s a chance of it. Now I think you at least have to augment the staff. So part of it for me is, I don’t really get why they did all this stuff to support their offensive staff, right? So they brought in an experienced coordinator, and on top of it they added another experienced coordinator to the room in Ben McAdoo. Where is that experience on defense?
Bertrand: You’re referring to Alex Van Pelt as the experienced guy?
Albert Breer: He has been a coordinator before. He’s at least held the title.
Bertrand: Yeah, but he hasn’t quite done the job.
Albert Breer: But then you backstop him with another coordinator. What I’m saying is that he’s way more experience than what they brought to the defensive side.
Bertrand: Without a doubt. Yeah, I don’t disagree with that.
