Would Bill Belichick Being Denied By UNC Hurt His Chances of Returning to The NFL?
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys reacted to the news of Bill Belichick’s on going talks with the University of North Carolina over the university’s vacant head coach opening. With this being Belichick’s second pursuit of a head coach opening in as many years, following being passed over last year by the Atlanta Falcons, this led to a overarching question being raised. If Belichick and North Carolina fail to come to an agreement, would his chances of returning to the NFL dimmish?
“Contributes To How You View Him Right Now…”
Bertrand: This is what’s funny to me, if Bill doesn’t get the job, it’s not because he didn’t want it. That can’t be said now. If Bill doesn’t get this job, it will be the second job that he’s really gone for since leaving New England, and they didn’t want him.
Zolak: He pushed his chips into the middle.
Bertrand: The Falcons and UNC. Not exactly the premier programs in the leagues that they play in.
Zolak: Yeah.
Bertrand: So now we wait. Tick tock. This is a development, so I guess he did report correctly. This is a development. We are seeing development in their talks.
Zolak: This is new news. This is new in his situation.
McKone: If this falls apart does this do damage for him getting an NFL job?
Bertrand: I don’t think so.
Zolak: No.
Bertrand: But I think it contributes to how you view him right now though.
Zolak: If you’re an NFL guy, you’re thinking like, “oh wow, he really does want to coach. Shoot, maybe we should have considered this.”
Bertrand: But was really wanting to coach the question?
Zolak: Ya, I mean with burnout, yes. I would factor in burnout age with the way the league is now. Offensive guys you know, that’s kind of where the league is going. Vrable’s out. Pete Carroll’s out. He’s out. Pretty soon Andy Reid will be out. Mike Tomlin is the only one left. Him, and Harbaugh, with tenure.

Patriots prospect watch: End of the College Football regular season
Catching up with the top projected Patriots targets in the 2025 NFL Draft after the end of the college football regular season.
The 2024 College Football regular season is officially in the books. While the conference championships and College Football Playoff still remain, for many prospects the book is now closed on the biggest part of the pre-draft process – actually playing the games. With the end of the season, some who aren’t getting postseason action have already started declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.
It’s been about two months since our last prospect check-in. Since then not much has changed in terms of the Patriots’ draft outlook, but new needs have emerged for the team and the players themselves have played significantly more football.
With four games left to go in their own season, the Patriots are currently slated to pick fourth in the upcoming NFL Draft. At this point it’s hard to see them falling beyond the top 10, so we have a pretty good idea of which prospects will be in play with their first-round pick.
Given that, let’s take a look at where some of the top prospects sit as their season comes to a close, or who has the most room to move in the CFP? We’ll have plenty of time to get into Days 2 and 3 in the coming months, but for now let’s go position-by-position through the top of the board – starting with arguably the Patriots’ biggest need…
