Marc Bertrand: I wonder about Jerod Mayo’s desire to be a head coach
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand questioned Jerod Mayo’s desire to be a head coach in the NFL after his interview with Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston.
He hasn’t smiled in a long time…
Marc Bertrand:
The part about asking was it harder? Is it harder than you expected? Of course it is. Of course it’s harder than you expected. I have a hard time believing that from any first-time head coach, even ones that are successful and are great out of the gate. I have a hard time believing that anybody who becomes a head coach doesn’t find it to be harder than what maybe they expected it to be.
Tim McKone:
What aspects do you think you surprised by in terms of this job so far?
Marc Bertrand:
How much work is involved. How much Bill did. How many different roles he fulfilled. How much time it takes to be a head coach. How many hours during the season it takes to do the job and do it well and how much you have to manage a lot of people. That to me I bet is the biggest shock. You got a roster of 53. You’ve got a coaching roster of 15… you’ve got a lot of different people that you are now in charge of. And it’s not about leading a team of 10 in a boardroom. It’s oh man, there are 80 people here that I’ve got to be concerned with. That’s a lot. It’s a lot to take care of. And not only do you have to connect with all of those people, you’ve got to lead them to where they need to go. And they’re not doing a really good job of it. It’s a freaking hard job man and they haven’t left you with the best people. They give you a subpar roster to do it with. So yeah, I would hope that it’s a little harder than expected. I just wonder about his desire and how much he loves the gig. For the first time in a while in this Tom E. Curran interview, he kind of like smiles and has a few laughs in there. But like the smiles and laughs have evaporated from Jerrod Mayo. Do you remember the press conferences in August and how they’ve changed from then to now?
