Phil Perry: Why it could be difficult to fire Alex Van Pelt
On Friday’s edition Zolak & Bertrand, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston explained why it may be difficult for the Patriots to fire Alex Van Pelt.
Depends on how Drake Maye looks…
Marc Bertrand:
What do you read into that? That sort of endorsement from the head coach. Does that mean that it’s a sign that AVP’s job is safe? That he’s not going anywhere, and that the head coach is backing him? That he’s giving a public endorsement of his offensive coordinator?
Phil Perry:
I think it’s legitimate. I think he really feels that way. And I do think it means that he likes the work that he’s done with Drake Maye. I don’t think it guarantees Alex Van Pelt’s job for next year. I’m not reading that into those comments. But I will say again, I think it will be really difficult for them to move on if by the end of the year, it’s Drake Maye who looks like the best rookie quarterback in this year’s class. I would say already he’s #2. If you cut back a little bit on the turnovers and if Jayden Daniels continues to not light the world on fire, which he hasn’t the last couple of weeks and I think he’s dealing with an injury which was the big concern with him coming into the NFL ranks, it’s going to be difficult for them to pull that security blanket away from Drake Maye. Now, maybe Drake Maye looks at it and says listen guys, I could care less either way. You know if he says something along those lines, I’m going to be fine with whoever you bring in here and that’s his mindset, then maybe they are willing to move on for somebody who’s going to amplify the rest of the offense around the quarterback position. But if it continues to track this way, it’s not easy to find combinations that work, and if this one looks like it’s working, I think it’s hard to move off from it.
