Zolak & Bertrand: The biggest thing we’ve learned from Patriots training camp so far
We have entered the next phase if the preseason as the Patriots enter a game week for the first time in 2023, so it’s a great time to take stock of where the Patriots stand now. On Monday’s Zolak and Bertrand show, Scott Zolak and Cerrone Battle, in for Marc Bertrand discussed the biggest thing that they have learned about from Patriots training camp so far. To nobody’s surprise, the main takeaway had a lot to do with the offensive side of the ball.

‘The energy is better…’
Hardy: Is there anything you’ve learned about this team so far, zone in this in this pre-season during this camp?
Zolak: I’d say the energy is a lot better. The environment, the energy is a lot better. I see guys bouncing around, I see guys move and I see guys having fun. I think they were miserable last year. I’m serious.
Hardy: They do appear more energized, yes. Have you learned anything, Cerrone?
Cerrone Battle: I agree with that. They look confident. I mean, when they when they’re happy, they’re confident. When you’re confident, you know, you look good, you feel good, you play good. All the stuff you saw them in stadium the other day and Juju and Mac Jones are just laughing as they’re running around the stadium. Everybody’s feeling good about themselves. I mean, all the reports last year to say time last year it was the exact opposite and guys were right to predict that it was going to be a disaster and it was, so yeah, that I would definitely add to it. And the only thing I’m waiting to learn is if what’s their identity, who they’re going to be.
Patriots roster projection 1.0: Where the roster stands heading into the 'dog days'
The Patriots are just under two weeks into training camp as they hit their second off day of the summer, and it’s been a very eventful two weeks. After a slow start early in camp the offense picked up, with the defense hitting back to wrap up the final full practice of the second block on Thursday.
While there’s still a long way to go, 18 hours of practice time have taught us a lot. Leaders are emerging in positional battles across the roster – some as expected, and others with potential breakout players.

So as the Patriots hit an off day and transition between the beginning stage of camp and game preparation, let’s take stock of where the roster is at. It’s time for our first roster projection of the summer.
For the purpose of this projection, we’re mainly working off what we’ve seen so far. There is some room to project ahead – and those projections will be noted – but for the most part this is what the roster would look like if the Patriots had to make their cutdowns now. We’ll be back with an updated projection after each preseason game as things change.

Not much of a surprise here. The Patriots will stick with the same quarterback duo they had for most of last season. As for the new ‘extra QB’ roster rule, Malik Cunningham has been working exclusively with the wide receivers so far this summer, so it doesn’t look like the team plans on doing anything ‘out-of-the-box’ in that regard.
