Zolak & Bertrand: Should the Patriots take a flier on Justin Fields?
Zolak & Bertrand, along with Patriots insider Phil Perry, debate if it would be a good idea for the Patriots to trade for Bears quarterback Justin Fields, despite already signing Jacoby Brissett and having interest in taking another signal caller with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft:
‘Why would you not be interested in that?’
Perry: If it’s a fifth or sixth round pick, which it feels like it might be trending in that direction, the guy still hasn’t been dealt. Yeah, if it’s that low, why wouldn’t you? I mean why would you not be interested in that? So you could use the sixth round around a guy who’s going to play special teams for you?
Zolak: I don’t think it’s going to happen because I think the coaches have input here. You selected a guy [Brissett], you guaranteed him pretty much $8 million to sort of be that placeholder because it’s a safe pick and we know the guy. Okay, it’s all about picking this guy. I don’t see them going to get another veteran. I think he’s more dynamic. I would go after Fields. I would do the Fields thing in a second.
Perry: Injuries happen. Quarterbacks are valuable. Say it’s a sixth round pick for Justin Fields, you wouldn’t do that? So you could go get the equivalent of a Kayshon Boutte or a John Halapio or Cash Maulua? Like, get out of my face.
Beetle: Don’t start telling me about all the great fifth and sixth rounders. And Tom Brady was 199. Generally speaking, those picks are worthless, so they don’t result in much. I don’t want to give up a third round pick for Justin Fields, but a fifth or sixth? Sure. Go ahead.
