Pats Pod: Quarterbacks for the Patriots, now and later
The Patriots continue to have major questions about their future at quarterback – both now and in 2021. So Matt Dolloff and Alex Barth want to take a big-picture look at the most important position in New England.
As for 2020, Cam Newton has flashed at times but has mostly come up short in crunch-time situations. His passing numbers have been well-below-average. And now he’s on the injury report. Is it possible that we’re starting to see a transition to Jarrett Stidham? Matt and Alex debate whether a move to Stidham would make sense for Bill Belichick at this stage.
But the Patriots’ bigger question for the quarterback room, is who’s in there in 2021? Stidham may still be around, but will Newton or Brian Hoyer? Putting the draft aside, Belichick may want to go in a different direction for a veteran stopgap. Matt gives his pick for a proven playmaker to come to New England, while Alex gives a few choices for guys that Belichick can depend on to protect the football and manage games.
