Zolak & Bertrand: Patrice Bergeron should stay retired
Even though Patrice Bergeron has already dispelled rumors that he would be coming back from retirement to join the Bruins, Zolak and Bertrand discussed why the former B’s captain should not entertain the idea of joining them down the stretch run of the season:
Beetle: There’s been plenty of chatter about Patrice Bergeron making a return to the Bruins. Spitting checklists threw this out there going back oh, I don’t know. Week plus. Right. Those guys were talking about the possibility that maybe he was out there skating. Steve Conroy of The Boston Herald. He texted Bergeron, and Bergeron said adamantly, I am not making a comeback. He also did an interview with The Canadian Press saying, no, it’s not happening. Talking to Canadian Press’ Joshua Clipperton. When asked about it, he said, I’m not making a comeback. Not trying to make a comeback. Let me ask you this. If you’re the Bruins right now, do you want Patrice Bergeron to make a comeback? Do you want to introduce that? I would love it. Yeah, but is that what they want? I’m curious. Should they want it?
Matt McCarthy: I don’t think it makes them that much better, and I think it gets in the way of the goal of this season, which is transitioning to the future. I mean, put it this way, if you felt like it were the difference between you making the playoffs or not, maybe that’s a different story. And [Charlie Coyle has] played really well. So like, we’re all of a sudden going to de-emphasize Coyle because Bergeron’s back. Didn’t that kind of happen in the first round series last year? I thought Coyle was their best player until Bergeron came back. Coyle on that Marchand line. They were great.
Zolak: Bergeron wasn’t great either. He lost face offs and stuff. Like, he wasn’t the same guy. After he retires, you look at the team and he knows the sport like this isn’t sport, like you just bring guys back. I know Krejci went away and came back because of a coaching change. But that was running it back with that group one more time. He’s not coming back to run it back with anybody you know, or skate with Marchand.
