Beetle: Why Mac Jones has been so frustrated during training camp
On Wednesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Beetle dived into why Mac Jones has been so frustrated throughout training camp as the offense adapts to the new changes being put in place.
Beetle: Well, I think that Mac (Jones) is probably not happy with the change in the offense.
Zo: I’m sure he’s frustrated.
Beetle: And he’s wanted to build on what he did last year and he wanted to come in and be better. And they are maybe resetting things on him where he can’t build on what he did last year and he can’t build on all the work that he put in by himself on his own in the offseason. And they’re changing his coach to the threesome that they’re now having of coaches. And he doesn’t have his guy here anymore in Josh McDaniels who I think he formed a really good relationship with over the course of the season. That guy’s gone, he doesn’t have him to lean on and they’re trying to install a new offense with guys who’ve never even coached offense before and he must look at that and say, this just doesn’t feel like they’re putting me in the best position to succeed. I think it’s impacted his attitude up until yesterday where he sounded better, he sounded better and more confident going forward. And he’s sticking to the hey, we’re just going to do this because this is what we’re doing.
Zo: You know what I see a lot of it between snaps is when he turns around and he looks and I see this from up top, I see Joe (Judge) and Matt (Patricia) doing this and that’s looking down at their papers.
Beetle: Lot of time looking down at the papers.
Zo: Instead of the eye contact, talking to him, to where you bring up Josh. This is why I say that now I go back to, you know, Josh would grab him every time in between every play and point and talk to him about it. Josh didn’t need to do this. Go to the play sheet. Josh had it up here like Bill has it up here, you know calling defense. Bill never had a play sheet for defense or any of that. So that you see as a quarterback and I’m turning around, I’m looking for some sort of input. But okay, I’m looking at what is our next play that we have coming up here, and oh crap how do we call this, we’re running this out of split. Yeah, they’re learning it too, as he goes.
