Breer: Belichick will have to change coaching style in college
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Albert Breer discussed whether or not Bill Belichick’s coaching style will mesh with college athletes.
Belichick Coaching Style
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Albert Breer: There’s a very common practice with college coaches when recruiting players. You tell them how great they are for a couple of years, you get them on campus, then you have to de-recruit them. Knock them back down.
But you can’t do that anymore because players can all leave. They all can pick up and go. So, I think to some degree that’s exactly what we’ll see. Bill Belichick may have to adjust the way he coaches a little bit.
Fred Toucher: According to guys who played for him, there’s no way he’ll be able to relate to those student-athletes. And guys that have played for Bill even have college-aged kids now. And they’re saying, “There’s no way.” He’s going to drive them all away.
Breer: There’s going to be an adjustment there for Bill. Again, part of this might have to do with—I think what a lot of people are hyper-focused is the whole 18- and 19-year-old aspect of all this. But Bill doesn’t necessarily have to build the program that way.
If you look at what Curt Cignetti did at Indiana this year, you will see that he took Indiana from one of the worst programs in any power conference. I don’t think it’s even an argument. I mean, it was like 25 kids out of the portal during the college football playoff.
Indiana was the worst football program in the north. It’s a basketball school like North Carolina. And so like, there’s a different way to build a program. I think, you know, I guess that Bill Belichick and his staff will go hard into the portal.
