Socci: Patriots are taking steps backward
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Bob Socci expressed his frustration that the New England Patriots are taking steps backward.
Socci: Patriots Not Meeting Goals
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jon Wallach: Alright Bob, the game was what it was. I mean, the Patriots are 3-11 now. They’ve lost four in a row and they’re not going to the playoffs. The one thing I think everyone here in the room is concerned about is that they don’t seem to be getting any better.
Even though we’re in the last four weeks of the season, you’d like to see an upward trend to give us something to feel good about. That isn’t happening.
Bob Socci: Yeah and you go back and think about the stated goals coming out of the bye going into this game. On offense, they wanted to be more efficient in the red zone. And yeah, they were 2-for-3 in the red zone yesterday, but two of those scores were in garbage time. The drive that counted they got stuffed on both 3rd and 4th down with less than one yard to gain each time.
They wanted to prevent turnovers and they did not do that. They also wanted to get turnovers. And yes, there was a personal foul that nullified a giveaway by Arizona. And you could make the case that the call was borderline, at best. Nonetheless, they lost the turnover margin.
They went 0-for-6 on 3rd down, and the Cardinals went 10-for-15.
Looking at the four games that were left on the schedule going into Sunday, you wanted to see young players get more opportunities to see how they’ll progress. Ja’Lynn Polk was out there but only got one target. Javon Baker wasn’t available in the concussion protocol. Caedan Wallace was still unavailable on injured reserve.
And Layden Robinson—the young rookie at guard, another player from the draft class this year—was called for a critical holding penalty on that first drive. That more or less derailed that drive before Joey Slye missed the field goal.
So, from that standpoint, you wanted to see more individual performances from the younger players and were hoping the Patriots could better evaluate them.
You could throw Cole Strange in there too, who’s working at the center position since coming back from the PUP list. And, he wasn’t ready to go yesterday, so there wasn’t an opportunity to see him either.
They didn’t improve, and in some ways, I think they took a step back.
