Forsberg: Tough for Marcus Smart to watch Celtics win championship
On Wednesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Chris Forsberg detailed Marcus Smart’s playing return to Boston.
Marcus Smart F.O.M.O.
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: What was it like to have Marcus Smart back in the building? And how did the players view him as a teammate when he was on the Boston Celtics?
Chris Forsberg: I think he had very close relationships with his teammates, especially with Jaylen Brown. They butted heads a lot early in their careers. Then they figured it out in terms of respecting what each other did.
I think there’s probably part of Marcus Smart where it was tough watching from afar to see that same core elevate and win a title. I’m sure.
Jayson Tatum said that he always thought Smart would be a teammate. But the league changes. That’s pretty undeniable.
Part of one of those moves the Celtics made was trading away my favorite player, Robert Williams. And I can’t argue that it didn’t work out. So, I understand it.
It was weird though because it’s been 530 days since they traded Smart and took him forever to get him back on the court. Unfortunately for him, he had a pretty rough shooting night. And the Celtics had an even worse shooting night.
Jon Wallach: Marcus hasn’t changed a bit. Eleven shots in 19 minutes. He went 1-for-11. That sounds about right.
Forsberg: The Celtics shot 30 percent, or whatever, from the 3-point line. And someone said the other night that it was a tribute to Marcus Smart. So, I thought that was that was a little harsh.
But you know, look, I think Marcus is in a good situation. I think that team is going to be in the mix in the West after a pretty rough year last year. Marcus sounds like he’s in a good place, family-wise. He brought his son back here for the game the other night.
It is different, though. It was just weird seeing him in a different uniform. I know that happens all the time in the NBA, but it just felt weird, especially from my perspective, someone who has covered this team forever. It was hard to remember a season when Marcus wasn’t here.
So, there’s always some emotion involved. I wish he had played better on his trip home.
