Scott Zolak: I think Bill Belichick is here the next 2+ Years
Scott Zolak and Marc Bertrand question how long Bill Belichick’s contract is with the New England Patriots.
2+ years?
Marc Bertrand: Speaking of trying to clear things up, there are more reports on the status of Bill Belichick’s contractual situation, here in New England. Tom E. Curran, NBC Sports Boston writes,” In trying to confirm the report, the original one from Ian Rapoport on Sunday, sources indicated Belichick’s contract expires after the 2024 season, which doesn’t seem to fit the definition of, quote, locked up long term.”
And here’s why. Robert Kraft wants Jerod Mayo to stay in Foxborough. Mayo agreed to a two year contract extension in the offseason to remain as linebackers coach through 2024. Kraft has inferred he views Mayo as a head coach. The timeline for Mayo’s elevation to head coach only matches if Belichick steps aside after 2024″, which means again, he may have received a new contract in the off season, a new two year contract. Rip up the old one, give him two years and you’ve got two years to go. So if that’s the case, does it make it more likely that he is indeed going to be the coach in 2024 and they’re going to see through the end of that deal and then hand it over to a Mayo for 2025.
Scott Zolak: I mean, I know we also Mayo is the next guy. I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t totally keep that as gospel, because of just the way this league’s heading and yeah, we’ve talked about the offensive guys, and if you’re in the analytics and we know that the people within the Kraft group love analytics, they love numbers. And if it’s an offensive trending league and it benefits you as you study this and you look post Bill, which teams have success in this league as a defensive minded head coach teams or is that offensive minded head coach teams?
And that’s not to say that Jerod can’t be the guy. I think you sit down with them, too, and you go over, you know, well, how many beliefs are you going to re-instill or sort of have the same things that Bill kept? And if a lot of them are the same, they may want to go in a different direction. I wouldn’t keep it as gospel that Mayo’s one hundred percent the next guy. And, I think it’s two, two plus. I think he’s here the next two years.
Marc Bertrand: Two plus. What do you mean, plus? What’s the plus?
Scott Zolak: I think he’s here Two more years. I think that’s that’s the cut date; I don’t think it’s year to year. I don’t think that guy operates year to year. Meaning I think they would love as an ownership, to operate rate year to year. I think Bill wanted some more security.
