It doesn’t sound great for the Patriots and Hunter Henry

The latest reporting on impending free-agent tight end Hunter Henry doesn’t sound promising for the New England Patriots.
As noted in a comprehensive combine report by Mark Daniels, Chris Mason, and Karen Guregian at MassLive, the Patriots and Henry are “far apart on an extension.” The story says the Pats “would like to bring Henry back,” but the veteran tight end is expected to become an unrestricted free agent.

Henry led the Patriots with six touchdown catches in 2023, catching 42 passes for 419 yards in 14 games. He was named a team captain prior to the season. For those reasons, it’s a little surprising that the Patriots don’t seem to be acting aggressively to keep him.

Patriots Director of Scouting Eliot Wolf said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine that he intends to bring his core philosophies from the Green Bay Packers to New England. One of those tenets is to sign core players to extensions. Henry apparently doesn’t fall into that category.
The Patriots reportedly have offered contracts to both wide receiver Kendrick Bourne and safety Kyle Dugger, but it’s unclear how competitive those offers are, compared to the potential of the open market. Wolf may feel more strongly about extending core homegrown players, as opposed to guys who came in from the outside. So, perhaps Henry doesn’t qualify as a player the Patriots are strongly prioritizing.
However, it appears that if the Patriots can’t retain Henry, they’ll sign another tight end in free agency. Read below for our complete top-10 free agents.
Ranking the top-10 free agent tight ends of 2024
There’s a solid crop of free agent tight ends about to hit the open market.
Headlined by the Houston Texans’ Dalton Schultz and the New England Patriots’ Hunter Henry, among other notable names, this group of free-agent tight ends is among the better groups in recent years. While there’s no true star like Travis Kelce or George Kittle heading to the market, multiple starting-caliber players are set to be there for the taking.

Some clubs may be compelled to retain some of these guys, but they’d also have a good chance to cash in at the highest bidder once they become unrestricted free agents. Here are the top-10 guys on track to hit the open market, and what they’d bring to their teams…
1. Dalton Schultz

Making the most of a one-year deal in Houston, Dalton Schultz now finds himself at the top of the free-agent tight end market. As at best the third option for Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud, Schultz caught 59 passes for 635 yards and five touchdowns. His catches and yards lead all free agents at the position.
If Schultz is paid like one of the top tight ends in the league, he might be overpaid. But he’s earned the right with a well-timed contract year performance and presence at the high end of the market. His next AAV should top Jonnu Smith’s $12.5 million, which would vault him into the top-10 highest-paid tight ends.
