Forsberg: How long until Payton Pritchard is starter?
On Wednesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Chris Forsberg wonders if Payton Prichard could soon become an starter in the NBA.
Forsberg: Payton Pritchard Starter?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jon Wallach: If you put Payton Pritchard on another team how good would he be? We saw what happened to Jordan Poole when he went from Golden State to Washington and disappeared.
Chris Forsberg: I do remember us having that conversation last week. I hedged on it and agreed with Fred that it’s difficult for a smaller guard to elevate.
And now, he’s scored 20-plus points in four straight games. He’s looked really good. It’s hard to do, but he’s thriving in his role.
Fred Toucher: He’s playing a lot and the Celtics are playing their bench a ton.
Wallach: That’s by design too.
Toucher: Well it’s smart and it’s a great luxury to have. But I mean, they’re playing the ninth and tenth guys off their bench. And still are winning by 25 points.
Wallach: Except for the game in Cleveland the other night where Mazzulla went all in and lost.
Toucher: And that’s the thing. Pritchard got minutes in that particular game. I would make the argument that he is the scoring leader in the league for bench players because of how dominant the Celtics are.
Forsberg: Yeah, that’s fair. Sam Hauser missed a couple of games to start the year because of a back injury. I thought that once he came back, it might pull Pritchard back to earth a little bit. But that hasn’t happened. He’s been really good.
His minutes have stayed up because they’re leaning into his play style. They’ve been missing some guys the last few games too. So, I do think there’s a road map for him to keep this up and to be Sixth Man of the Year.
Whenever I watch these games now, I’m like, man, give credit to Brad Stevens. We always praise GMs when they make good moves, but as Danny Ainge used to say all the time, “The best deals are the ones you don’t make.”
You start to think about Justise Winslow and what they would’ve given up for that. And thank God that Brad Stevens didn’t trade Payton Pritchard when he was disgruntled. And who knows what the Celtics would have gotten in return? Probably not a lot at that point. And now you have a guy in Pritchard who’s potentially a future starter.
As Jrue Holiday gets older, we’ll find out more about that. How good of a starter could he be? But, right now, he’s been awesome.
