Bill Russell to be inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame for second time
Bill Russell’s legendary resume got a little bit longer on Sunday. The 11-time champion and five-time MVP now can add a second Hall of Fame induction.
Already inducted as a player in 1975, Russell will be a part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 as a coach. The Hall made the announcement Sunday morning.
When Red Auerbach retired before the 1966-1967 season, he named Russell as player-coach of the Celtics. With that move, Russell became the first Black coach in NBA history. He’d win two titles in that role with the C’s, in 1968 and 1969.
After his retirement from playing, Russell had two coaching stints elsewhere in the NBA. He spent four seasons as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics from 1973-1977, and one more with the Sacramento Kings during the 1987-1988 season. Overall, he compiled a record of 341-290.
