Marc Bertrand: My ideal offseason for the Patriots offense
While discussing the future of the Patriots, Marc Bertrand broke down his ideal offseason for the team going into the 2024-2025 season.
I like Kirk Cousins, but…
Marc Bertrand: All right. What’s your ideal situation next year for offense? Mine is this. They end up with a high pick. They draft a quarterback in the draft. Now, it’s not necessarily (Drake) Maye or (Caleb) Williams, but it’s a draft pick that is used on a quarterback somewhere reasonably high. Maybe another first rounder, maybe a high second rounder, someone. They are drafting that guy. They’re signing a veteran. And they’re going to let the veteran and Mac Jones duke it out in camp with the kid they just drafted, knowing he’s not starting. That’s my ideal setup going into next year and that to me is reasonable and achievable. My conversation I had with you yesterday about liking Kirk Cousins. I love Kirk Cousins for stopgap guy, right, like one or two years. I think it’s kind of a long shot, I think it’s unreasonable, I don’t think that’s the pool you’ll be dipping your toes in, I really don’t. It’s going to be somewhat less than that. So veteran on a short term deal. Mac (Jones) is back and we drafted another guy. We drafted the next guy. And Mac and this veteran are going to duke it out to see who’s going to be the starting quarterback. We don’t have one named going into camp, it’s a competition. That to me is like, okay, there’s something new there. There’s something you can work on there, and it’s going to make your team better next year. You’ll be a better team. That’s why I don’t want to just, you know, move on from Mac in this offseason because he doesn’t want to be here.
