Felger: Patriots need to claw their way back and change the narrative
The New England Patriots’ record is 1-4 to start the season for the first time since 2000.
On Friday’s Felger & Mazz program, Mike Felger explains why he’s not yet ready to see the Patriots head down the wrong path.
FULL CONVERSATION
Felger: My opening take is on the Patriots. This is not a prediction. If you ask me to predict what will happen with the Patriots this weekend and the rest of the year, they are circling the drain. I wouldn’t bet on them this week.
You can headline the article for the website by saying, “I’m not giving up.” I don’t want to give up. I’m not ready for it.
You know what I want? I want them to win on Sunday in Las Vegas. I want Mac Jones to straighten things out. I want them to get a little wind in their sails. I want them to split the next two games with Buffalo and Miami—don’t ask me how they’ll do that.
The Patriots need to get their record to 3-5. Then, the schedule really sort of flattens, and you have a salvageable season. Only then could Belichick shut a few people up. The team could do the whole thing where they say, “Everyone wrote us off.” That’s what I want to happen.
I want the Patriots to flip the script, change the narrative, shut everybody up, have a decent season, claw their way back into it and shut up the doubters. I want all of it. I’m not giving up on that.
But what does that mean? Does that mean they keep everything in place, and that’s actually worse for the Patriots in the long term? I mean, you might have a case on that. I can’t tell you in the long-term that’s necessarily the right thing to do. Maybe they should bottom out to blow everything up and start over. That could be the best course of action.
I’m just telling you that I’m not wired to think that way. I’d love to see them turn it around, shut some people up and reestablish themselves. That’s what I’m rooting for, honestly. Not that it’s going to happen, but that’s it.
