Mac Jones 2.0 has arrived…
While the Patriots offense has sputtered and lacked explosiveness through 2 games, it’s clear that Mac Jones 2.0 has arrived. Especially after his comments following the loss against the Dolphins.
This is the 2.0 version of Mac…
Marc Bertrand: Mac Jones after the game on Sunday night, talking about putting in the work, saying if a couple of guys are doing it, everybody needs to be doing it. People took those comments to mean that he was calling out his teammates. I didn’t quite take it like that when he said it, and he clarified it yesterday in his radio interview saying that, no, no, I was not calling anybody out. But I do think there’s value in what he said, which IS…
Scott Zolak: it’s a sense of urgency comment.
Marc Bertrand: Well, it’s it’s a sense of urgency, but it’s also a leadership thing like, hey, more work. Everybody do more work. Keep working. When he clarified yesterday, he said, you know, you got to get your 8 hours of sleep. The rest of your time right now needs to be focused on this, on this and this only. And I’m paraphrasing what he said. So if you want to call it calling out his teammates, fine. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the quarterback saying, ‘Everybody work harder. We’re 0-2. We’re obviously not doing enough.’ And he went on to say, if you’re watching 30 minutes of film, make that an hour. If you’re doing an hour in the gym, you got to do two. That’s just basically the gist of his comments. So I’m curious to get both of your opinions on this, being in his position. Having been in his position, being a player, how does that sound if you’re in that locker room right now for Mac?
Ted Johnson: Well, I’ll say this. Has Mac been the problem? Has he been the first, second, third, fourth, fifth problem on this team? Probably not. So it allows him to maybe say that stuff. So I think Mac’s got everybody’s respect in there. I feel so he can say those things. You know, the season started off and it’s not where they want it to be. But for Mac, this is what we want. We want him to take ownership of this team. Right. And I think a lot of us in training camp and preseason were watching some of his behavior, like he’s not making it his team. We wanted him to make it his team.
Marc Bertrand: I think he is. This is Mac 2.0.
Ted Johnson: This is him now taking ownership of the team and that’s what you need and I think that the tension behind the scenes with him and Bill (Belichick) probably is what limited him from maybe being the leader that he appears to be now, you know, but he needed to take this next step. I don’t have a problem with it. As long as he’s backing it up by doing everything he’s asking other guys to do, which I’ve been hearing that he has, then that’s good. I mean, the only thing that concerns me is what’s he saying there? Right?
Marc Bertrand: Are there any guys in there not doing enough?
Ted Johnson: That’s it and you start to think that maybe the buy-in level isn’t there.
