Fantasy football leagues often seek unique and engaging ways to determine their draft order. While some opt for the simplicity of random draws or birthdates, others take creativity to the next level. Some of these suggestions from the interwebs include trivia nights to test knowledge, beer pong tournaments for friendly competition, survivor-style challenges, video game tournaments, and even astrological signs. Custom challenges like scavenger hunts or fantasy-themed puzzles add a “memorable touch”.

Ultimately, the draft order in fantasy football leagues is not just about picking players; it’s an opportunity to bond, have fun, and showcase the league’s personality. Whether keeping it simple or going all-out with an original idea, these methods add an extra layer of excitement to the fantasy football experience, ensuring that every participant eagerly anticipates draft day.

With all of that said, let’s explore some “creative” ways in which fantasy football leagues decide their draft order, including the way my friends decide our draft order, which we consider to be the best.

Trivia Night:

Test your league’s knowledge by organizing a trivia night, with the draft order determined by participants’ performance. Questions can range from NFL history to pop culture references.

My take: I would start searching for a new group of friends if they do trivia to decide the league’s draft order. Lame.

Beer Pong Tournament:

Combine fantasy football with a little friendly competition by hosting a beer pong tournament. The winners get first pick, while the rest follow based on their performance.

My take: Fun idea in your early 20s when your liver is still pure and doesn’t have mileage on it unlike the league

Fantasy Decathlon:

Channel your inner Olympian with a decathlon-style event featuring various physical and mental challenges. The draft order is determined by participants’ overall scores.

My take: No.

    Custom Challenges:

Dream up your own unique challenges, from scavenger hunts to fantasy-themed puzzles. The more creative, the better!

My take: Great idea if you’re in a league of your kid’s pre-school friends’ parents.

  • random drawing

    Random Draw:

The most basic method involves drawing names or numbers from a hat. While simple, it keeps everyone on an even playing field.

My take: I mean, ok? Obviously you’re not very close to anybody in this league if this is how you decide draft order.

  • Video Game Tournament:

Embrace the digital realm by hosting a video game tournament. Winners get the privilege of selecting their draft position.

My take: I’m in a league with my High School friends (Tucker Silva is the league’s commissioner). We have hands-down the BEST way to decide our draft order: Royal Rumble.

We determine the Royal Rumble order based on the previous year’s final standings. Each participant or team then chooses ‘randomly.’ The wrestler that appears in their random selection represents them in the Royal Rumble. For authenticity, we only use WWE No Mercy on Nintendo 64. If there’s a duplicate selection, they choose again. The participant who lasts the longest in the Royal Rumble gets the first pick for their selection position. The first one eliminated chooses from the remaining selection positions.”

And that’s it. The best way to decide the draft order for fantasy football.
