Alex Bregman saga ends as infielder signs with Boston Red Sox
After months of speculation, the Boston Red Sox have signed infielder Alex Bregman in free agency.
Longtime Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman was one of the top players available in this year’s MLB free agency cycle. Despite that, Bregman remained unsigned as pitchers and catchers reported this week. On Wednesday night, though, his free agency came to an end.
As first reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Bregman is signing with the Boston Red Sox. It’s a three-year deal worth $120 million, with opt-outs after each season.
There was no shortage of reporting and other speculation linking the Red Sox and Bregman throughout the offseason. The team has been in need of another infielder, and Bregman was a top candidate. Chris Cotillo of MassLive noted after the signing that Bregman “will likely play second base for Boston” after primarily playing third base during his time in Houston (the position held by Rafael Devers in Boston). The Red Sox were also reportedly pursuing St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado via trade prior to the signing.

Bregman, who will turn 31 next month, spent the first nine years of his career with the Astros, where he overlapped with current Red Sox manager Alex Cora. During that time he was a two-time All Star (in 2018 and 2019) and won a Silver Slugger (2019) and Gold Glove (2024). He was a key player on two World Series-winning teams as well.
Last season, Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 145 games. The 26 home runs were the most for him in a season since he hit a career high 41 in 2019.
In Bregman, the Red Sox get a player who has historically hit very well at Fenway Park. In 21 games, the right-hander has slashed .375/.490/.750 with nine doubles, seven home runs, and 15 runs batted in.
Red Sox fans won’t have to wait much longer to see Bregman in uniform. The full roster report date to Fort Myers for spring training is this upcoming Monday, Feb. 17.
