Why was Bill Belichick spending so much time with the WRs?
On Zolak & Bertrand, the crew dove into why Bill Belichick was spending so much time with the wide receivers on Day 1 of training camp.
Just observing it all?
Beetle: Bill Belichick has been working exclusively with the offense since this practice began.
Scott Zolak: Receiver group alone there for a while. And you just mentioned Billy O’Brien covering one of the stacked slot receivers. Matt Patricia or Joe Judge do that last year?
Beetle: No, you were saying this year, if you can’t get your hands on a player and say, do this not that, then what are you as a coach?
Scott Zolak: I even go back to the COVID year where Scar talked about, I as a coach, personally couldn’t teach through Zoom. I am a hands-on guy. I need to grab guys, slap them, move them along, pick them up, move them, technique wise show them what I expect them to do. And this is the difference you already see through basically you know just one period. Now they’re throwing against air okay, so there’s a lot of cheers here and they’re doing different formations. Mac (Jones) looks really sharp. Now granted he’s throwing against air, but it’s ball’s out quick, fifth step, and what Phil’s (Perry) talking about right there to is the energy that he shows.
Beetle: Bill O’Brien in coverage on (Mike) Gesicki on that play.
Scott Zolak: Working a little redzone.
…
Beetle: But the interesting thing is why’s Bill hovering… why is Bill hovering over there?
Scott Zolak: Just observe it all. I think like how’s (Kendrick) Bourne doing with it? Is Bourne responding well? Like Bourne looks very involved to me early here. Without getting into detail of the groupings, who’s running with the ones, there’s only certain things we can talk about. But the energy of Kendrick Bourne and (Davante) Parker here and I know we’ll get to some of the tweets from training camp about JuJu Smith-Schuster stuff and how he looks. But you know, those two guys, Parker and Bourne, they’ve been here. Mac should feel comfortable with those guys and should have a pretty good rapport throwing with them. As far as the timing aspect of it, balls out, balls in the air, and they’re catching at its highest point. Those two guys look like they came out and they’re ready to compete, so they haven’t gone against defense yet. So just to gauge all your talk here for the first couple of days, this looks like massive install. This is day one install.
