During this morning’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Patriots.com‘s Evan Lazar discussed Mac Jones‘ future and expressed his belief that he may not be part of the New England Patriots come training camp.

Lazar cited two main reasons for this prediction. First, he believes that Mac Jones may have lost the trust of the locker room, making it challenging for him to lead the team successfully. Additionally, Lazar highlighted the Patriots’ advantageous position with the third overall pick in the upcoming draft, pointing out the depth of talent in the quarterback pool. He suggested that drafting a quarterback at the third pick and potentially signing a veteran in free agency would be a more favorable strategy than retaining Mac Jones.

Fred Toucher: A lot was made that Mac Jones was at Mayo’s press conference. They’re interviewing offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators. What do you feel is Mac Jones’ future on this team?
Patriots.com’s Evan Lazar: Yeah, I still don’t think that Mac Jones is going to be on this team, come training camp. And this is just my gut feeling. I think that there are two, uh, reasons at play here. First, uh, I just feel like he’s lost the locker room. I mean, he’s lost the trust of the teammates who are going to remain on this team to quarterback this team back to the playoffs or to a winning record, or however you want to put it. I just don’t see how he gains that back in this locker room and in this environment. So, uh, between that and the fact that the Patriots do hold the third overall pick in the draft, and it is a good quarterback draft, I just don’t necessarily see a path for Mac Jones here. And I don’t necessarily see him as a great option as a backup, uh, to that next quarterback either. So I would much rather see them go with the third overall pick at quarterback and then maybe sign somebody in free agency that’s a veteran like Jacoby, or Gardner Minshew. Someone like that, uh, who can mentor and also maybe, uh, bridge the gap to the rookie, uh, rather than go back with Mac.

Here are the college QBs that could be targets in the 2024 NFL Draft
After a rough Week 4 road loss to the Cowboys, the New England Patriots were ready to bounce back as they faced the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon…Or so they thought. Their hopes were dashed as the Patriots had a disastrous game, losing 34-0, and their 2023 season record fell to 1-4.

Mac Jones had a tough start as Tyrann Mathieu intercepted him and returned for a pick-six, giving the Saints an early 7-0 lead. Despite their efforts to recover, the Patriots missed a crucial field goal, allowing the Saints to extend their lead with more touchdowns. The Patriots never gained control of the game.
In the third quarter, the Patriots’ offense turned the ball over once again due to a significant fumble by Ty Montgomery. Seizing this opportunity, the Saints scored another touchdown, widening their lead to 31-0. Subsequently, with the game slipping out of reach, the Patriots made a quarterback change, replacing Jones with Bailey Zappe. Unfortunately, their offensive struggles persisted, and the situation did not improve.

Ultimately, the New England Patriots were shut out at home by the New Orleans Saints with a final score of 34-0, landing them at the bottom of the AFC East with a 1-4 record. Jones had a tough outing, completing 12 of 22 passes for 110 yards and two interceptions during the game. Notably, it marked the first time in Bill Belichick‘s coaching career, including his time with Cleveland, that he trailed by 30 points at home.
With their 1-4 record, the Patriots now face critical decisions, including evaluating Mac Jones and whether he is the right guy. They may also consider potential quarterback options for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Here is a list of college quarterbacks who could potentially replace Mac Jones in 2024:
