Breer: There’s ‘an inevitability of where this is going’ with Belichick
Albert Breer of The MMQB joined Zolak & Bertrand on Thursday and shared his thoughts about where things are heading with Bill Belichick and the Patriots:
‘An inevitability of where this is going’
“I think Kraft should, during the bye week, sit down with Bill and say, “How do you want to do this?”
“Because it does feel like there’s an inevitability to where this is going at the end of the year. And I think after 24 years, it makes sense to me that those guys should be able to sit down with each other and say, ‘We don’t want this to be awkward.’
“Maybe Bill does want it to be awkward, I don’t know. But I would think The Krafts wouldn’t want it to be awkward. We’ve talked about how they don’t want this to be a firing. Is there a way to create something where it’s not awkward over the next two months, and where there is a way to celebrate Bill and everything that he’s accomplished when you get to the point where it’s appropriate to do so? Not yet, of course, because there are still a bunch of games to play, but there will come a point when the games don’t matter anymore officially, when we get to the point where it’s officially done. And there will come a point when I think we all know there’s an inevitability to what’s going to happen after the year. And I think that this would be the right timing to sit down with Bill, if you’re Kraft and say, ‘how do you want to do this? If you want to walk away now, you’ve earned the right to do this however you want to do it. If you want. If you want us to have to terminate you at the end of the year, then we’ll do that. But we don’t want to come to that. So we want to at least give you options here and how you want to handle the next two months. Whether it’s do nothing, and then there’s a mutual parting. Whether it’s an announcement in December, so we can celebrate you in that last home game against the Jets. Or if you want to do it the hard way, we can do it the hard way.’
“But I do think that it makes sense.”
