Perillo: J.J. McCarthy hype similar to Mac Jones in 2021 draft
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Paul Perillo compared the J.J. McCarthy draft hype to Mac Jones’ situation in 2021.
J.J. McCarthy is Another Mac Jones?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Perillo: There is a lot of enthusiasm with regard to the draft and the number three overall pick. So, I do think there’s a lot of anticipation for that.
I think the draft still kind of centers around the quarterback position. And this is what I sort of wrote about earlier this week. The J.J. McCarthy thing still kind of has me flummoxed. I don’t know exactly how to take it, but I still don’t think I’m taking it seriously.
It might be as simple as Jim Harbaugh, who’s hell-bent on getting J.J. McCarthy to be that fourth QB drafted. He could even be doing this to give himself the pick of the litter. I don’t know that to be the case, but that’s kind of the theory that I ran with. That’s what I worked on yesterday.
The Chargers start at five, and everybody believes the top three: Williams, Daniels, Maye—will go in some order. Daniels and Maye will go second and third. And then Harbaugh could get Arizona to take J.J. McCarthy or another team to go up and get into Arizona’s spot to take J.J. McCarthy.
I think Harbaugh started all this McCarthy hype by calling him the best quarterback in the draft. He’s been saying stuff like, “He’s going to have the best career out of all these guys.”
I think he’s trying to entice someone to say, “Well, if we want this guy, we can’t wait at pick 11. We’ve got to go up and get him.” That way he gets to pick whoever he wants at five.
Hardy: Yeah, I think it’s fair, in many ways, to get caught up in what Jim Harbaugh has to say. Some sources around the Michigan area have been saying McCarthy is really legit. But, yeah, just like anyone at Alabama would have told you Mac Jones is an NFL-caliber quarterback.
Perillo: No, I think that is unfair to McCarthy. And I know my buddy Jim Murray loves to call McCarthy “Midwest Mac.” There’s really no comparison between the two skill sets. McCarthy is far more skilled and athletic than Jones. His toolbox is much bigger than that of Mac’s.
But the similarities between their end-of-season status, as opposed to the pre-draft run-up status, are very similar. Mac Jones was considered a second-round pick when the season ended. All of a sudden, McCarthy is rocketing up draft boards. If you remember, in 2021, some people thought San Francisco and Shanahan would take Mac Jones at pick number three. And that’s what you’re hearing about with McCarthy now.
