Felger & Mazz: Reflecting on the Boston Bruins 2023 trade deadline
The Boston Bruins recently ranked 32nd in The Athletic’s pipeline rankings for 2023. On Thursday’s Felger and Mazz the guys discussed the Bruins farm system and wondered if the lack of a good prospect system means they screwed up at the 2023 NHL trade deadline.

Did the Bruins screw up the trade deadline?
Felger: The question is, does that make you go back and say they screwed up the trade deadline? They shouldn’t have given away those draft picks? The fact that they ranked 32nd out of 32 is a combination of two factors: they keep trading away first round picks and Don Sweeney sucks at drafting. It’s kind of a lethal combination. But should they not have traded away those first round picks?
Mazz: No. I didn’t have a problem with this deadline. Some of the other ones maybe you can look back at and say, okay, maybe you wouldn’t have made that deal. But this one I didn’t have a problem with.
Felger: I agree. The problem was not retaining the guys. I said at th etime that I’m fine with the first round pick for Bertuzzi and I’m fine with the first round pick for Orlov if you keep them.
Jim Murray: Or at least one.
Felger: Right. So the issue is not that they gave up what they gave up for those players, they were going for it. Good. Go for it. Those were worthwhile targets. But now you’re going to let them walk away for nothing and keep Grzelcyk, Carlo, and two goalies? That’s my issue. Like, use that first round pick for a guy for the future and flip your roster. That was the problem. I said it at the time: If they keep these guys it’s a success. If they lose them it’s a fail. So fail, fail, fail, fail. You just rented them? Oh, those were overpays for rentals. If it opened the door for you to keep them long term then that’s a different thing. You feel okay about Vaakanainen and a first for Lindholm. He’s here for the future and hopefully figures on how to play in the postseason. He’s a good player. I’d say the same thing about Bertuzzi and Orlov. But instead you don’t resign either of them and you still have two goalies who you can’t use and Carlo and Grzelcyk. Never mind some of the others like. No, no, no, no, no. That’s your fail.
Jim Murray: Nobody should be surprised by this ranking because, again, it’s a track record of poor drafting overall and they’ve pissed away all these first round picks. But if you do that, look, I had no problem with them trading those picks in the recent years but can you hold on to one of these guys? Bertuzzi is the one like this was a lock. You’re were going to extend him and he’s going be here and now he’s in Toronto for a year?
