Perillo: Drake Maye hype is an overreaction
On Monday’s Felger & Mazz program, Paul Perillo joined the program to discuss the current hype surrounding Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
Overreaction to Drake Maye?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jim Murray: I came in here, Paul—Imagine this me being overdramatic—last Monday and said it was the darkest weekend for the Patriots since the wild card lost to the Titans. That was Brady’s last game as a Patriots. And it just gave uncertainty with everything.
Last week, you saw every other quarterback drafted in the first round do something to make their respective fan base and say, “Oh, wow!”
Especially, even with Bo Nix, who I think stunk at Oregon, and he’s now had a couple of good preseason games for Denver.
Looking at that whole weekend, when comparing it to Drake Maye, it’s like, “Oh, everyone’s got someone better than us. This stinks!”
But then, Maye went out on Thursday night and had a good game. He made a couple of throws and made some plays stepping up in the pocket. The footwork looked better. I think everyone rightfully felt better about it.
Paul Perillo: Yeah, I would say that you know this will be a big surprise, but gross overreactions both weekends. And I understand where Murray’s frustration came from.
Mazz: Overreactions of what we do, Paul.
Perillo: I mean, what we all do that. I’m not trying to finger-wag in any way. We do the same thing at Patriots.com and everywhere else that we talk about this stuff.
With the first game, I think the frustration that came from me was that he only played six snaps. But I didn’t read into that and conclude that he can’t play or isn’t ready. That’s where the overreactions all came from.
The frustration to me was more with the Patriots quarterback development plan. I know they have a plan, but how can it not include getting your rookie quarterback as many reps as possible? That’s where the frustration was for me the first week.
In the second week, I agree with again, Jim. For the people who wanted the Patriots to draft a quarterback with the third overall pick, you saw glimpses of hope. There was hope last Thursday night against Philadelphia. You saw some things that he did. I thought they did a nice job of giving him things he’s more familiar with, from college and whatnot. I thought that was a great move to get him a little bit more comfortable. And there was hope there.
From that Eagles game to today, all I’m hearing is, “Drake Maye has to start! What are we doing? Brissett can’t play.”
This is all about Drake Maye and when they think he’s ready to play. This isn’t about Jacoby Brissett. The Patriots must figure out when Maye is prepared. They must figure out how fast that can happen.
