Patriots drafted the wrong first-round quarterback?
On Monday’s Felger & Mazz program, the guys react to Drake Maye’s lackluster debut performance. Meanwhile, all other 1st-round quarterbacks thrived this weekend.
Drake Maye Wrong Pick?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Felger: So, you watch these NFL shows—SportsCenter and NFL Network—what did you see this weekend?
Mazz: I saw rookie quarterbacks rifling the ball all over the field, running sideline to sideline. All of them were wearing NFL uniforms except for one.
Felger: I saw highlight after highlight of one rookie quarterback after the next.
Mazz: Seriously. J.J. McCarthy looked like a slimmed-down Brett Favre out there.
Felger: He was slinging the football, running all over the field. It was highlight after highlight with these rookie quarterbacks.
Mazz: Every one of them! every one of them. I saw most of them on my phone in real-time. It was like holy crap, this is unbelievable. As the weekend elapsed, I was like, they’re all playing well except for one! Maye didn’t even get a chance.
Felger: Murray, your thoughts?
Jim Murray: It’s the most depressing weekend for the Patriots since the first weekend of 2020. Remember the Titan’s wild-card loss that was Tom Brady’s last game in New England? Everyone was trying to convince themselves that everything would be alright. And that everything was going to be fine.
But deep down, you know, in your core, things might get bad. Like, what’s happening here?
This weekend was a showcase of all the rookie quarterbacks. All of Drake Maye’s peers in the first round competed. And they all showed something to their respective fan bases that wooed them.
In Jayden Daniels’ case, he said screw the and threw a 43-yard bomb on 3rd-and-3. I saw that in real-time on Saturday when I was doing the show with Gasper. Daniels was the quarterback that I wanted. But Chad Ryland had to make the stupid kick against Denver on Christmas Eve.
The whole day it kept getting worse—Bo Nix on Sunday and J.J. McCarthy on Saturday. Every guy in the first round who’s a peer of Drake Maye did something to give their fan base hope. For the Patriots, the best we’ve got with Drake Maye right now is uncertainty.
It’s either these morons coaching him don’t know what to do with him or he might just stink. They’re afraid of using him, so we haven’t seen him. Everyone showed something but your guy.
If you’re saying you’re not concerned, you’re lying to yourself. Period.
