Felger & Mazz: Is there any competition between Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark?
Boston Bruins goaltenders Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark won the William M. Jennigs Trophy after the 2022-23 NHL season for allowing the fewest goals against in the NHL. The two also share signature hug after every win for the Bruins. On Wednesday’s Felger and Mazz the guys discussed the relationship between the two and wondered if their close relationship may be something that hurts them when it comes to crunch time.
Is no competition a bad thing?
Felger: One thing that I just want to talk about that I think is the polar opposite of Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, and is a bad thing, is Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. And I’m not crossing sports, I’m just now giving you a different chapter here. But I don’t feel like there’s any competition between those two, and I don’t think that’s a healthy thing.
Jim Murray: No, it’s a quite literal love fest after each win. You know, it’s the “let’s hug it out” and the whole celebration thing.
Felger: And even though yesterday Swayman was talking about “they push each other because they know that the other guy’s so good. If I slump, the other one’s going to get the net and he’s going to play”, so it does sort of bring out the best in each other. When it matters most, I haven’t seen that. In the regular season, fine. Yes, it works. Yes, yes, yes, fine, fine, fine. But now you’re in the postseason and now it’s like, is there a guy there that’s going to say, “I want to win this thing and that’s my net. And this A-hole is not going to take it”. Like I don’t think they have that thing. And it’s sort of they’ve both sucked in the postseason. And does that speak to sort of a lack of competitiveness or a softness that probably benefits him in the regular season? But when it comes time to “now you got to go take it”, do they both lack that thing? And is that an example of they they get along too well?
Jim Murray: Yeah, probably. I’m with you, once the postseason starts, you want an absolute psycho in between the pipes ala Tim Thomas or someone with that kind of mentality. Like, “this is my goal, this is my net. We’re going to win this series and nothing’s getting past me”. And their mentality, for the both of them, especially Ullmark, they come off as a little too nice. And sure that works great in the regular season, but they just lack, especially Ullmark, because it felt “Rasky” there, there’s like an intangible missing and it’s probably not a good thing.
