Barth: Footwork of Drake Maye is improving
On Wednesday’s Felger & Mazz, Alex Barth joined the program to give an update the footwork of Drake Maye.
Drake Maye Improved Footwork
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Felger: How does he look? How does Drake Maye look?
Barth: He looks good. I think the thing that stands out to me is just how much progress he’s made. Like, he’s clearly taking the coaching and it’s going into effect. His footwork looks completely reworked from where it was at UNC. I think he’s really developing—
Felger: —I’m going to stop you. Give me specifics.
Barth: So, it was all kind of a mess. He had two different offensive coordinators who used two different footwork packages in the two years in college.
Felger: Two different footwork packages?
Barth: Yeah.
Murray: Was he on the clutch package at UNC?
Mazz: They tried to get him on the twinkle toes package.
Barth: Some offensive coordinators, you know, you’re in the shotgun, want the right foot for it. Some offense corners want the left foot forward.
Do you remember Peyton Manning was like, squared up to the quarterback, right? When you backpedal which foot do you step with?
Felger: Alex van Pelt said the other day we are a left-foot-forward offense.
Mazz: Yeah, he did. He did say that.
Felger: Here’s what I want, Barth. I want the specifics.
Barth: Basically, in two years, Maye had to learn two different footwork patterns after the kid essentially didn’t play football for two years. His senior season of high school was canceled by COVID-19, and then he red-shirted his true freshman.
Now, suddenly, he’s seeing footwork coming at him left and right. Yeah, he was stumbling over himself a little bit. We talked about this a lot leading up to the draft, and that was a big question. How quickly is he going to adapt to an NFL system where the footwork leads to the timing?
But it looks like he’s done a tremendous job taking on the coaching. I’m not going to sit here and say it’s perfect. He’s still got a way to go. But in eight or nine practices, he’s come a very long way. I think that’s really encouraging cause it all starts from the footwork up.
