Are Felger and Mazz coming around on Alex Van Pelt?
Are Felger and Mazz coming around on New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt?
Felger: I don’t know if I’m fully coming around on Alex Van Pelt but…
Mazz: Better.
Felger: You really have to weigh switching up the scheme and the coaching for Drake Maye and making sure it’s really worth it. You know what I mean? So is this me moving a little bit towards keeping Alex Van Pelt? Yeah, sure it is. I’m not telling you to keep him. I’m telling you if a month ago I was 100% to move on from the guy, getting someone better, get a real guy in here, now maybe I moved back to like 75%. You know what I mean?
Mazz: Of course. Yes. We have got to factor in what’s good for the quarterback. And if he keeps playing like he does or has been in this offense, if he looks like he did yesterday with any sort of consistency, I mean, I think that’s a huge point for Van Pelt’s favor?
Jim Murray: He’s got to stop being so conservative when they get into the red zone, though.
Felger: He definitely needs improvement and definitely needs to shake off his conservative nature, for sure. Absolutely he does. But if my offense goes for 422 yards, I pick up 54% of my third downs, I have 23 first downs, did they run for 200 net rushing yards yesterday?
Mazz: It’s a little deceiving because of Drake Maye’s 41 yard run. And also they had an early run that Stevenson broke 32 yards or so. Now look they count, don’t get me wrong. But you know, that’s 73 of your yards. It’s almost half you’re rushing on two plays.
Felger: But just if I get 23 first downs, convert almost 55% of my third down attempts, have 422 yards of total offense, possess the ball for 34 minutes, and my quarterback has a 97 quarterback rating, like what more am I going to expect than that?
Mazz: Right pretty good.
Felger: I mean, I would like to win some of these games and I think Van Pelt’s a part of that because they just don’t go for the jugular when they can go for the jugular.
