Mazz to Charlie McAvoy: Shoot the puck
The Boston Bruins had a come from behind victory on Tuesday night over the St. Louis Blues. Defenseman Charlie McAvoy tied the game with a shot from the point, which led to Mazz screaming about how he wants to see McAvoy shoot the puck more often.
Felger: McAvoy shooting the puck. Can you shoot the puck dude? They pay you $9.5 million a year. Even Montgomery had a great cut after the game on McAvoy shooting there to tie the game.
Q: How’d you like that first shot mentality from McAvoy tonight?
A: Loved it. What a shot. If I could shoot like that, man, why wouldn’t you use it all the time, right?
Felger: “Why wouldn’t you use it all the time?” Do they pay you? $9.5 million a year?
Mazz: Yes, $9.5 million.
Felger: To what? Just like…
Mazz: Skate around.
Felger: To float it on the blue line to the other guy on the power play?
Mazz: Yeah, skate around. Around the perimeter.
Felger: Jesus, shoot the puck.
Mazz: No, like you’re figure skater. Sometimes that’s what he does. Skate around crossover, you know, do the sort of figure eight thing like that’s what he does. It drives me bananas. And not to say I told you so, I’ve been screaming about this for three years. Do you remember the story that when Neely said, the difference between McAvoy and Ray Bourque is that Ray used to shoot the puck every time he got it. Now again that and look, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration. He’s not Ray Bourque, we all know that. It might be the biggest offensive problem on the team with the personnel they have. I’m not suggesting they have great personnel. One of the biggest problems they have is McAvoy won’t shoot the damn pack. Shoot the puck. God it’s so aggravating.
Felger: You want to be the guy then there has to be offense in there. Goal scoring has to be a part of it.
Mazz: It’s unbelievable. Shoot the puck.
Felger: And he can do it. I mean, did you see where that landed?
Mazz: It’s a bullet.
Felger: It’s tremendous.
