Bruins provide update on defenseman Derek Forbort
A rough season for Bruins defenseman Derek Forbort has almost certainly come to an end, according to an update courtesy of Bruins general manager Don Sweeney.
“One of the items that obviously came out today was in regards to Derek Forbort, and we went and put Derek on LTIR today,” Sweeney confirmed. “People should realize that Derek has been playing through two significant injuries. One for sure is requiring surgery, and the other is one that quite possibly could. So real kudos, and testament to the character of Derek wanting to be that ultimate team player and play through some significant pain and injuries.”
Battling injuries since the start of training camp, really, Forbort missed over a month and a half at the midway point of the season, and when he returned to the team on Jan. 20, it was clear that he was not at 100 percent. Most recently, the Bruins had sat Forbort as a scratch in four of their last five games, one of which came after Forbort was late to a team meeting.
Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery tried to downplay the injury (likely as a means to protect Forbort and the team until they made their call), but Sweeney and the B’s ultimately hit a point where they were not comfortable sending No. 28 out there.
“It got to a point where it was not feasible for [Forbort] to continue to play,” Sweeney acknowledged.
And with Forbort in the final year of a three-year, $9 million contract signed in 2021, it’s entirely possible that Forbort’s Bruins career is over, as he’s staring down a jump back into unrestricted free agency this summer.
In action for 35 games this season, Forbort totaled four assists and a plus-8 rating, and racked up 65 blocks over that 35-game run. Overall, the Minnesota-born Forbort has compiled nine goals and 30 points, as well as 253 blocks and 307 hits, 165 games with Boston since the start of the 2021-22 season.
The update on Forbort, as well as his move to the LTIR, ultimately paved the way for Boston’s deadline day trade for defenseman Andrew Peeke ($2.75 million for another two years after this season).
