As Day 3 of the NFL Combine gets underway on Saturday, it’s the quarterbacks’ turn to take center stage. That position group – along with running backs and receivers – will take part in testing drills and on-field workouts Saturday afternoon.
That is, those of the group that are participating. The top three quarterbacks in the draft – Caleb Williams of USC, Jayden Daniels of LSU, and Drake Maye of UNC – have all opted out of on-field work for this week.

For a New England Patriots team that is projected to take a quarterback, that may not be too much of a problem. One report from Indy suggests the Patriots have already seen enough to come to the same general consensus on all three players.
According to Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald, “multiple members of the Patriots staff have told the Herald that they view all three top quarterback prospects, USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, as worthy of a top-three selection.”
Because the Patriots are drafting third overall in a three quarterback draft, they will have the chance to take one of the top tier consensus passers. At the same time they (most likely) won’t have their choice of which one with the Bears and Commanders also expected to take quarterbacks with the first two picks, meaning that if their views differed from the consensus, they could be left looking in another direction. Along those lines, many of the takes and assumptions about the Patriots taking a quarterback third overall have been couched with some form of qualifier along the lines of ‘assuming they believe in the player that falls to them.’
This new report basically renders that qualifier irrelevant. We now know that the Patriots see all three quarterbacks as being worthy of the third overall selection. That means the pick will likely come down to whether or not the Patriots want to use their best offseason asset to reset at the quarterback position or improve the team elsewhere, rather than the team’s faith in any of the individual players.
The Patriots met with all three of the quarterbacks at the Combine as well. According to Kyed, Maye “made a strong impression on the team in his formal interview.” Daniels also discussed his interview when talking to the media on Friday, explaining why it would be “dope” for him to end up with the Patriots.
Meanwhile, the rest of the quarterbacks – a group highlighted by Washington’s Michael Penix, Oregon’s Bo Nix, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, will take the field on Saturday to sort out the rest of the board. Here’s a look at what our rankings look like heading into the workouts…
