Last week Boston Red Sox owner, John Henry, John Henry said he has no plans to sell the Red Sox and suggested fans have unrealistic expectations for his team in a lengthy (and rare) recent interview.@jtomase has more 🔽https://t.co/p1m1K8aRmK
Mazz: The 1 in 20 and 1 in 30 comment, first of all, you can take 10 or 15 teams in baseball right out of the gate and throw them out the window.
Felger: It’s not a 1 in 30 league, it’s a 1 in 10 league.
Mazz: Right. I was going to say 1 in 10, 1 in 15 tops. But there aren’t 15 teams in baseball that can win the World Series. The problem now is that you’re not one of the 10 that can.
Jim Murray: But he’s charging the ticket price for one that should be in that top ten. That’s the thing, this is why people are so pissed off and he’s talking about them like they’re the Rockies or the White Sox.
Mazz: Oh, it’s ridiculous and the other part of it is, do you think fans realistically expect a championship every year?
Felger: Of course not.
Jim Murray: They expect them to be competitive though. Again for the ticket price and you know, the investment that they’ve put into this team their whole lives, how the team used to be treated by this ownership, the expectation is that high for a reason. And rightfully so.
Mazz: So the 1 in 20 and 1 in 30, that is only true if 20 or 30 are trying every year. OK? That is only true if they’re all trying. If they’re not trying, the odds are better. Unless you’re one of the ones that isn’t really trying. Unless you just want to live in this gray area of “let’s be the third wild card team, win enough to get to 85 games, sneak into the playoffs, and then roll the dice”, and even then it still feels like teams with high payrolls almost routinely win the World Series. Or pretty damn near close. So does spending money guarantee you a championship? No, but to win one, you probably have to spend. And again, I’m not even saying 100%, but almost every team that wins has a high payroll.
