Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt reveals what he seeks at quarterback
Everyone knows what they want in a quarterback, and yet it’s so hard to find one.
And there’s a major reason why: quarterback is a leadership position. Plenty of guys come in with physical talent. It’s hard to know how they’re going to handle it mentally, how they’re going to lead. It’s impossible to quantify, and yet essential to the position.

New Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt made one thing clear in his introductory press conference on Wednesday. Whomever his quarterback is, that guy needs to have good leadership qualities. He’s not wrong to feel that way.
“Smart, tough, and a leader,” Van Pelt described his ideal quarterback. “Obviously there’s accuracy in the pass game and mobility and decision-making, there’s a lot that goes into it. But at the end of the day, that role is such an important role for not just the offense but the team as well … a guy that’s a true leader that can come in and really understands his teammates and gets the best out of those guys.
“The physical attributes are obviously important, but if a guy is a great leader and can come in and make good decisions and throw the ball accurately, those are all pluses. But the guys I’ve been around that are the great players, often [are] the best leaders and the most competitive guys as well.”
So, if Van Pelt is going to have as big a role in finding the Patriots’ next quarterback int he 2024 NFL Draft, we know what attributes he’ll be looking for in his evaluations. He circled back to the leadership part later in his press conference, and hinted at a particular quality he’ll be studying among the prospects.

“This goes back to decision-making, accuracy, the fundamentals, mechanics, if the guy’s sound – big one again is leadership,” Van Pelt said. “Was he a four, three-year captain? Why wasn’t he a – all that really plays together. The big piece to me is the leadership, the toughness, the accuracy, and the decision-making.”
So, he tried to stop himself, but Van Pelt is going to be scrutinizing captaincy.
The Patriots will likely have their pick of one of two quarterback prospects at No. 3 in the draft, UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. Both were voted team captains for 2023. Maye was also a team captain as a redshirt freshman in 2022.

If the Patriots really want a captain, they could opt for Washington’s Michael Penix with a later pick. Penix was voted a team captain for his final four seasons between Indiana and Washington. Bo Nix was also a three-time captain between Oregon and Auburn. Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy was not named a team captain, but ostensibly only because of eligibility issues.
No matter whom the Patriots select as their next QB, it’s clear that Van Pelt seeks a leader. It may be hard to talk about, because you can see arm talent and read numbers on a sheet. But it’s impossible to know whether it’ll all translate until they step into the league and lead their teams. It’s why it’s the easiest position to make a wish list for, but the hardest to actually identify your guy.
The Patriots are putting the hopes of finding the right guy in Van Pelt’s hands.
