A few of last year’s Patriots coaches are returning in ‘to be determined’ roles
On Monday evening the New England Patriots announced 17 new hires to their coaching staff. However, that list didn’t tell the full story of the 2024 staff.
That announcement only included coaches joining the organization. Those who previous reports indicated will be returning – like cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino and safeties coach Brian Belichick, were not included.

Because that list only included new hires, it didn’t do anything to solve the uncertainty around coaches from last year’s staff without new jobs. However, MassLive’s Mark Daniels added some important context in that regard on Monday night.
According to Daniels, five coaches from last year’s staff will be back. Some of the names Daniels includes had previously been reported, in Pellegrino, Belichick, and skill development coach Joe Kim. He did add two new names as well – wide receivers coach Troy Brown and assistant quarterbacks coach Evan Rothstein.
Brown has been the Patriots’ wide receivers coach since 2021, after joining the staff as a running backs coach in 2020. Although he’ll be back on the staff, the Patriots have announced the hires of both a wide receivers coach (Tyler Hughes) and assistant wide receivers coach (Tiquan Underwood), suggesting Brown could be in for a new role in 2024.
In addition to coaching running backs and wide receivers, Brown has also been listed as a ‘kick returners coach’ during his time in New England, so it’s possible that could become his full-time responsibility. According to Daniels, Brown’s new title is “to be determined.”
Rothstein joined the Patriots in 2021 from the Detroit Lions, where he worked under Matt Patricia. During his first season in New England Rothstein worked in ‘research and analysis,’ before becoming a general offensive assistant in 2022 and then assistant quarterbacks coach in 2023. The Patriots have hired a main quarterbacks coach in T.C. McCartney, but have yet to name an assistant (although senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo has experience working with quarterbacks), meaning it’s possible Rothstein returns to his old job.
The only other coach who has yet to take a new job and hasn’t been confirmed to be staying is assistant head coach Joe Judge. Judge was not mentioned in Daniels’ report, which could be a sign the organization is moving on from him.
