The New England Patriots’ active roster is back at 53 players. After opening up a roster spot earlier in the week, the team added a rookie cornerback on Thursday.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Patriots have signed rookie cornerback Alex Austin. Austin fills the spot opened up when wide receiver Kendrick Bourne was placed on IR.

Austin, 22, was a seventh-round pick out of Oregon State by the Buffalo Bills this past spring. After spending training camp with the Bills he was cut and signed with the Houston Texas, who moved him from the active roster to the practice squad in October, then released him on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-1, 191-pound cornerback appeared in three games for Houston this year. He played five snaps on defense, and 14 on special teams. The Patriots recently released a rookie cornerback that mainly played special teams in Ameer Speed, and it’s possible Austin could take over that role.
With Austin, the Patriots now have six cornerbacks on their active roster. He joins Jonathan Jones, Jack Jones, J.C. Jackson, Myles Bryant, and Shaun Wade.
